Reddit just decided it wants a piece of that entire genre.
What Reddit Actually Just Shipped
Starting August 17, Reddit began testing a new "Read" vs "Play" toggle on select posts.
Tap "Play" and an AI voice reads the post and top comments out loud, with the text highlighting in sync as it goes â playable as a short video or just background audio.
It's a limited test for now, only on select English-language posts in specific communities, on the Reddit app and website.
Wait, Can I Generate These Myself?
Not yet, and that's the part worth being clear on â this isn't a tool that hands you a "make a video from any post" button.
Reddit is auto-generating these for a sample of existing posts, not opening it up as a creation tool for users to run wild with.
The original text posts stay exactly as they are â this is just an extra way to consume the same content.
Why This Actually Matters
Reddit's pulling its own content back in-house â millions of TikTok views have been built on repackaging Reddit threads for years, and this is Reddit's first real move to keep that attention (and ad money) inside its own app instead.
The format is instantly familiar â anyone who's scrolled TikTok already knows exactly how to consume this, zero learning curve required.
This is coming straight from the top â CEO Steve Huffman literally name-checked the "AI voice reads Reddit story" trend on Reddit's earnings call in July as the direct inspiration.
So Is This Actually Good or Just More Noise
If it stays limited and well-curated, this could genuinely help posts and communities get discovered by people who'd never scroll a wall of text.
If Reddit eventually opens this up as a mass-generation tool for any post, that's a very different story â and probably a much noisier one.
Right now it's neither utopia nor brainrot apocalypse. It's a small test with big potential in either direction.
